Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego's first woman District Attorney, is a statewide leader in the legal community. She was the first openly gay or lesbian D.A. in the country and the first woman and the first Jewish District Attorney in San Diego. Her first job was as a junior typist in San Diego County. She studied law at night and, once admitted to the bar, served as a deputy district attorney from 1978 to 1990. In 1994, she was elected to the Municipal Court, where she served for four years and started the first drug courts in San Diego. In 1998, she was elected to the Superior Court, where she started a program called Domestic Violence Court, intended to reduce recurrences by perpetrators. Elected District Attorney in 2003, she held the office until 2017, when she left to run for the office of San Diego County Supervisor. As the chief law enforcement official of San Diego County, Dumanis proved a tough prosecutor who was also committed to crime prevention and victim's rights.
