Dr. Charlotte Baker

Dr. Charlotte Baker was San Diego's first practicing woman physician and, beginning in 1898, served as the first female president of the San Diego County Medical Society. During her decades-long practice, she delivered over 1,000 babies and never lost a mother in childbirth. Between 1888 and her death in 1936 she worked to eliminate prostitution, led the building of Balboa Park's Children's Home, helped to found the San Diego Zoo, advocated a shorter work week for laborers, served as president for nine years on the City Civil Service Commission, and co-founded the San Diego YWCA. Dr. Baker was a leader of San Diego's suffrage movement and helped California women win the right to vote in 1911.
