Elected to the San Diego County Board of Education in 1981, Dr. Dorothy Smith was the first African American woman elected to public office in San Diego County. During her tenure on the board, she helped establish educational policies and programs to promote equity and excellence. In retirement, she has continued to play an active role in community organizations, including Common Ground Theater and the Catfish Club.
